Introduction

Hi there, and thank you so much for enrolling in my course diets, why they don’t work and how to quit them for good. My name is Dr. Kim Daniels. And I am so glad that you’re here, I created this course, because diets and diet culture are so incredibly toxic, and one of the best things that you can do for yourself is to quit them for good. So over the next hour or so, we’re going to talk about why diets don’t work, the damage that they cause and how to quit them for good. So before we get started, let me just tell you a little bit about me. Again, my name is Dr. Kim Daniels, I am a clinical psychologist with a practice out in Hartford, Connecticut, I’m also an online coach. And both my therapy and coaching practices, I work with women who struggle with emotional eating, binge eating, overeating, and negative body image. And my goal is to always help my clients to create a much more positive, enjoyable relationship with food with their bodies and with themselves. And you cannot do any of those things. If you’re still dieting, focusing on those rigid diet rules, and the number on the scale will never help you to have a good relationship with food, or with your body or even with yourself. So let’s talk a little bit about the course it’s broken down into three modules, the first being why diets don’t work. So we talk all about the reasons that diets don’t work. And there’s many of them, and I break them into four categories, physical and biological, cognitive, emotional, and social. So we’re going to go through all of the reasons that diets don’t work. And I guarantee you by the end of that module, you will have a full understanding of why diets have not worked for you, I’m guessing they haven’t or you wouldn’t have enrolled in this class. So you will have a full understanding of the fact that this was never your fault. They’re a setup for failure. So you won’t be blaming yourself for the fact that they haven’t worked for you anymore. Module Two is all about the damage that diets can cause. Now for some people, they can go on and off diets, they can kind of go in and out of diet culture, well, they probably can’t do that. But they can go on enough diets anyway, diet culture is everywhere. And it’s not that big of a deal for them. But for many other people, it really is. And it can cause physical consequences, which we talked about. But it can also cause emotional consequences as well like depression, anxiety, obviously, negative body image or self esteem, or even diagnoseable eating disorders. So by the end of that module, you’ll have an understanding of the damage that diets can cause and you might resonate with some of those things. And then finally, Module Three is all about quitting diet culture for good, we’re going to talk about specific steps that you can take to exit diet culture. Now, is that going to be easy? Probably not. If you’re somebody who’s been dieting for decades, it’s going to take some work for sure. I mean, how we think about food, how we think about our bodies, all of that is impacted by diet culture. And that doesn’t just go away overnight. I wish it did, but it doesn’t. But this is a good place to start. And again, I’m going to give you some actual steps to take to exit diet culture. Now, I also created a mini workbook for you to use alongside this course, as well. There’s a few questions at the end of each module, you can do it you know, when you finish the videos, or you can do the whole thing at one time. That’s up to you. But hopefully that again, will help you sort of solidify your own experience of dieting and how it hasn’t worked for you. And again, to create these action steps to take to exit diet culture. Now finally, just a little disclaimer, this course is not at all meant to be a substitute for therapy or coaching. If you have concerns about your eating, I strongly suggest reaching out to a therapist if you don’t have one already. And certainly one who specializes in eating disorders. You can find someone at psychology today.com. You can look for people in your state your zip code, you know what insurance you have all that kind of stuff. Or if you just want some information on eating disorders, maybe you’re not sure if your eating patterns fit in eating disorder, you can go to National Eating disorder.org and they have information on on every different type of classification eating disorders. So I hope that this course is really helpful for you. I hope that it gives you an action plan for leaving diet culture and let’s get started.
