Poetry has a place in our curriculum. It can be taught as part of reading, writing, and language lessons. Poetry can add additional value to our studies.

Moreover, poetry employs language to evoke and exalt special qualities of life, andsuffices readers with feelings. It is particularly lyric poetry which is based on feelings and provides still another emotional benefit. Poetry is one of the most effective and powerful transmitters of culture. Poems comprise so many cultural elements - allusions, vocabulary, idioms, tone that are not easy to translate into another language.

Volodymyr Soryura is a famous Ukrainian poem. I believe every Ukrainian knows about him. His works are widely studied at school. The poem I chose for the course is not the most popular among readers but it is still beautiful. Moreover, it is not as difficult for you to read and understand it. That was basically the main reason to choose this poem for the course. The poem will definitely make your language beautiful and give you an insight on Ukrainian poetry in general.

The Essential Poet’s Toolbox for Readers and Writers

Learn to recognise and appreciate the techniques that lie at the heart of modern English poetry.

Students: 802, Price: $89.99

For non-poets and for novice writers, modern poetry can seem very arbitrary: poor writers proclaim themselves poets and present us with chopped-up prose labelled as poetry. Unless we understand the poet's tools and techniques, we are powerless to discriminate between good and bad and recognise when we are being sold short.

This course aims to introduce some of the techniques used in modern English poetry and explain how they are used, leading to greater skill in writing and better appreciation when reading.

Learn to recognise and appreciate the techniques that lie at the heart of modern English poetry.

  • Discover what poetry is and how the definitions lead us towards the tools and techniques available to the poet.

  • Learn about the emotional effect of metre and discover the innate rhythm of the English language.

  • Take a closer look at sonnets, haiku and other poetic forms.

  • Explore the different types of rhyme and other sound effects.

  • Learn about format and layout, the poet's own specific tools, and discover how line breaks and line length affect the way a poem is read.

  • Explore other devices that bind a poem together and distinguish poetry from prose.

  • Note: The course is intended as a general overview to foster understanding and appreciation of the different tools, but does not offer in-depth instruction on each tool, nor on specific poetic forms.

Poetic techniques can be used to enrich creative writing of all kinds, as well as being useful in other genres, including commercial non-fiction and advertising copy.

Whether you want to read or write poetry, enhance your enjoyment by increasing your understanding of the poet's tools.

Poetry is one of the oldest art forms, a way of expressing and channeling our emotions. For both readers and writers, poetry offers a means of exploring topics that may be difficult to talk about: we turn to poetry in times of grief and in times of celebration; we write it to comfort ourselves and to communicate our experience with others; we read it to better understand own feelings and to learn about the world beyond our own experience.

Benefits of writing poetry include improved verbal expression, articulation, self-awareness, spiritual growth, and enhanced linguistic skills, while reading poetry encourages empathy, and memorising poetry can help long-term brain function.

Course Overview:

The course contains more than 20 lectures and over 2 hours of video content. It is especially suited to novice poets and readers, as well as writers of other genres who are interested in expanding their repertoire or in understanding their poetical colleagues.

Note: the course focuses on modern English poetry; it is non-technical and does not attempt to teach formal literary criticism.

I have been reading and writing poetry since I was a child; when I first started reading. I simply enjoyed the poems, although I didn't know why, so when I started to write, I just wrote what felt good to me. Sometimes one poem seemed more successful than another, but I didn't have any objective criteria by which to judge that success. Then, when I started to study the tools and techniques that are the essence of poetry, it was like adding a whole layer of meaning and it suddenly all became a whole lot more fun.

Later, I started to attend writing workshops and I realised that much of the time even writers of other genres don't really understand what is going on inside a poem: all too often, they would tell me they thought poetry was entirely a matter of personal taste and if I'd written my poem like that it must, automatically, be right.

I developed this course to shine a light on to some of the inner workings of poetry, to enable others to understand and appreciate what poets are doing, and to help them recognise when this is working. Like most things in life, poetry is more fun when you know what's going on: I hope that by taking the course, you, too, can share the fun.

The immortal classical Chinese poetry season 1

Students: 767, Price: $19.99

Students: 767, Price:  Paid

This course will allow you to learn a wide range of Chinese language (such as language describing Nature, emotion, basic topics of human existence) by learning the breath-taking, immortal beauty of the original works of the most famous classical Chinese poets, world-renowned poets such as Li Po, Tu Fu, Wang Wei, etc. More than any other countries, classical Chinese poetry is given the most prominent and exalted status, which not only shapes Chinese language, literature, arts, philosophy and religion, but also Chinese history and politics. Chinese scholar-officials are invariably good poets who had passed Civic Entrance Exams with good grades and became high officials by composing excellent poetry and to a lesser extent, great essays. Moreover, the language of classical Chinese poetry is surprisingly similar to modern Chinese language, therefore it is very adaptable to the language use in daily life. For example, look at any casually selected poetic line, such as Li Po's poem, "月下独酌”,("Drinking Alone under the Moon")    "花间一壶酒/独酌无相亲/举杯邀明月/对影成三人”,("Among the flowers, a jug of wine/ drinking alone, no companion/ raise the cup, invite bright moon/ And my shadows, makes three") you will see that every phrase in the poetic lines is perfectly understandable and applicable as modern Chinese language. To the very few vocabularies that changes their usage in time, the course will explain carefully and provide the modern equivalent. One major change is that the monosyllabic vocabularies in classical Chinese  becomes double-syllabic in modern Chinese, but the source and change is perfectly traceable and easy to master and gives you a clear idea of the development of Chinese language. Therefore, by learning this course, you will not only take pride in yourself being able to understand and appreciate the greatest jewel of Chinese language and art, as well as crystallized Chinese philosophy embedded in this literary genre, which is world-renowned and highly influential on world literature and arts, but also learn a great range of Chinese language quickly, impressively, and memorably through the original works of these famous poets, and these language you acquired through this course is perfectly adaptable to your modern, daily use.

This first season of this classical Chinese poetry series choose the most famous poems of three greatest classical Chinese poets--Li Po, Tu Fu, Wang Wei, called the Poet Immortal (诗仙),Poet Saint (诗圣) and Poet Buddha (诗佛)respectively, and represent the Taoist, Confucius and Buddhist strands of Chinese culture respectively. Each poem of theirs is taught in three lectures: the first lecture teaches the language of the poem. Vocabulary lists are provided and taught to recite and to use in modern situation, the literal meaning of each poetic line is explained in great detail, and each poetic line is led to recite and memorize, because the vocabulary lists include vocabularies from the most basic to the advanced, any level of Chinese students can take the course, although it is advisable to take my College Mandarin Chinese on Your Own Beginning Level so that you are knowledgeable of the Chinese pinyin and writing system and basic Chinese vocabularies. The second lecture teaches in English the poetic implication, the relationship between its poetic form and meaning, composition method and philosophical influence of the poem, so that you understand and appreciate the cultural implication of the poem in greatest depth. The third lecture is a music recitation video made with my recitation (which you can read after), beautiful classical Chinese music and painting, so that you can further familiarize and memorize the language of the poem, and appreciate the immortal, living beauty of these poems.

Through learning this course you will be able to take greatest pride in yourself in being able to understand the greatest jewel of Chinese language and literature which has amazing homology with Chinese arts, philosophy and religion and shapes Chinese history for thousands of years. While you take the aesthetic flight, your Chinese skill will also improve drastically with the wide range of vocabularies and expression (in Nature, society, human emotion and basic human existence) you learned through these poems.

'I like that you are not just rambling about being authentic and finding yourself and on and on (like another course I tried), but getting right to the nuts and bolts of HOW to write poetry.' Gregory

'After reading many books about poetry and still not quite getting to grips with meter and stressed/unstressed syllables. Serena managed to teach me in a matter of minutes. Lovely clear and coherent teaching style. So glad I did this course'

'REALLY helpful. I'm delighted.' Liz

Writing poetry is a special way of using words and involves putting these words in a special order.

This course covers poetic form, rhythm and rhyme and encourages you to write poetry that you are proud of. It has been designed so that you can hop from one section to another, they are not dependent upon each other, this makes writing your poem easier for you as you can concentrate on the particular form of poem that you want to write.

This course not only explains how to write poetry but also has many various writing exercises to help you create your poetry.

There are practical projects for you to try which can be downloaded  - writing sentences in different metres, write a sonnet with specific line endings,  give examples of rhymes and more, answers and ideas are given in a pdf sheet.

I explain the importance of making a poem your own. We all go through different emotions during our life - some happy, some sad, some frightening, some serious and many of us find that being able to put on paper feelings that we find difficult to talk about very therapeutic. Creative writing can be a wonderful outlet for our emotions.

There is a closed private Facebook group where people can share their poetry with other students.
I have studied poetry since the age of 10 and in my profession as a voice confidence coach I teach people how to speak poetry out loud almost everyday of my working life.

Poetry is much more powerful when spoken out loud and so the last part of this course covers speaking your poems aloud.

Please look at my promotional video and free sample lectures to see how I can help you improve your poetry.

This course does NOT attempt to analyze English poetry it focuses entirely on you learning to write poetry.

My five-course language sequence published on Udemy in the past year, "college Mandarin Chinese On Your Own" is ranked no.1 in student review and sales in the Chinese language category on Udemy. Poetry is the most beautiful, concise use of a language, and the vocabulary of modern poetry is perfectly applicable for daily use. Learning poetry and poetry creation will allow you to acquire a language at its best and in a speedy, most impressive and memorable manner. The rhymed language (no matter it is the mechanical aspect of the rhyme or the rhythmic mood of poetry) and the startlingly original and beautiful use of language make the language in poetry easy to recite and highly memorable. I choose my own created poems short-listed and chosen for publication in American's poetry competition (one of them is "New Woman's Voices" series) to highlight the features of Chinese language, Chinese philosophical thoughts behind the poems and the creative inspiration and creative process of writing poetry. For each poem, I have made it into extremely beautiful video with pictures, music and my own recitation, which brings into resonance the artistic contagion of different mediums of art. For learning each poem, I will give three lectures. In the first lecture, I will lead you to learn the language in the poem. I will provide vocabulary list and teach you these vocabularies perfectly applicable to daily use and how to use them on daily occasion, I will explain to you the poem's literal meaning, and lead you to recite them. In the second lecture, I will explain in English the poetic meaning, philosophical thoughts and creative process behind each poem. In the third lecture, I will give you the musical video of the poem with my recitation and pictures (and subtitles of both Chinese and English version of the poem) to further impinge on you the aesthetic appreciation and understanding of the poem, and the memorability of the beautiful language. At the end of each section. I will give you some creative writing practice that allows you to use your learned language and creative process of making a poem. After learning the course, you will feel your Chinese language soar with your aesthetic delight in the ecstatic poetic flight. I am a professor of Chinese for 16 years at prestigious American universities, such as University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, College of William and Mary, Carleton College (for 9 years, ranked no. 1 in undergraduate teaching among American liberal arts colleges), and Hamline University. I have two PhDs in Chinese and comparative language and literature, published five academic books on Chinese and world language and literature, film and cultural study, and published quite a few poems with Chinese and American poetry journals. All the poems are reserved for my own future publication in books, so they are copyright protected, and please don't use them to submit as original, poetic works of your own. If a tree falls in the forest and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound? It's an age-old question. Now, think of your favorite poet or writer as a tree, and think of your favorite story or poem as a sound. Aren't you glad you were around to "hear it fall?"

If you're a poet who's ready to share his or her work with the world, do you know how to make sure there's someone around to read it?

I've learned a lot about the process of creating poetry chapbooks by trial and error over the past twelve years. I've created this course to share what works and what doesn't work, hopefully helping other poets avoid my most costly mistakes.

In this workshop course, I introduce and demonstrate the steps to creating a poetry chapbook in a three part timeline: preproduction, production, and postproduction. I break each of those three major parts of the chapbook project timeline into discussions and demonstrations of both administrative and creative tasks. I use videos, slides, and supplemental examples to guide students through the workshop. Students work a their own pace and set their own schedule for completion.

I work from the standpoint that chapbooks can't be defined by any one physical characteristic, and electronic chapbooks have just as big a place in my lessons as physical chapbooks. The secret is in the purpose and in the artistic currency. Want to know more? Sign up today!

I use poetry to teach people better communication. It's the ultimate workout for your linguistic, presentational and public-speaking muscles.

Poetry can help you in your chosen career - whatever it might be. Poetry can even help you to land your dream job!

I'm in the process of developing a much deeper, longer course (for people who want to become master communicators), I've created this short, simple course to enable anyone who is curious to dip their toe in the poetical waters.

In this course, my challenge is to teach you enough that you will be able to write a simple poem, using rhyme and rhythm, even if you've never written (or even read) a poem in your life?

Your challenge is to learn, practice, and produce.

I've set up dedicated forums to enable students to share all their attempts, and completed poems, with me and each other. So enrol, and discover what poetry can do for you.

Please note: As of 2020, the forum for posting and discussing your poetry is no longer available due to lack of demand for this feature. Please let me know if you would like to be able to share your poems.

Hey there, it's Andrew here!

Are you new to poetry? Are you struggling with the process? Have you taken a short "pause" from writing due to discouragement? Was it the infamous writers block? This course is for you.

Put simply. You and I will consider the most common problems that writers have, and then we will solve them.

I broke this course up into 3 different sections, allowing you to skip around and solve your own struggles immediately. My end goal is to give you what you need so you can push through your roadblocks and become the hero of your own story. Enjoy this course made just for you, and I hope to see you soon!

This is a course for people who have failed to get to grips with poetry in the past. Maybe they have had a bad experience at school, or find the subject daunting. I will be taking a step by step approach so that we get to understand the "mechanics" of a poem and gain confidence in looking at it critically. We will then examine ten poems in detail, so we can put theory into practice. The selected poems have been chosen from a wide background so as to cover a large spread of history and styles.

Do you long to nourish your spirit? Are you searching for a spiritual experience that awakens and enriches you? Many of us want to pry open our minds, hearts and souls to a deeper wisdom.

The mystic poets had direct, intimate connections to the Divine. Their vibrant, provocative language helps us let go of mental striving, and cracks us open to a richer truth.

I’ve been leading an in-person mystic poetry group for a while and now I’d like to invite you to walk this transformative path, by starting with Rumi and selections of his work.

Throughout the course I offer guidance in experiencing the rich, direct spiritual life expressed in Rumi’s words. Not only will we read the words, we sit with them, we learn to surrender to the transformative power of mystic wisdom. Letting the words rest in you, and gently opening yourself to hear what speaks to you; this is a contemplative practice.

Mystic poetry has many different facets, and I’ve found that reading the same poem at different times in my life, I encounter new and important meaning.
