audio engineering: Basics of Compression

This course will teach you the basic compression skills you need to start using a compressor

Created by Christopher "Czar" Smith - Independent Audio Engineer

Students: 232, Price: $49.99

Students: 232, Price:  Paid

Using a compressor and understanding compression is one of the hardest things for entry audio engineers to grasp. With so many different compressors and compressors types its not hard to see why people struggle with compression. Compression is critical to getting good mixes in music today, and without a proper knowledge of compressors and how to use them your mixes can easily turn thin and lifeless. Compressors can add color to tracks, crush drums, smooth out vocals, and add weight to a bass. Compressors can add to an track, or it can take away. For example, with a compressor you add punch to a kick drum, you can take the punch away. It all depends on how you use it. And there are many, many ways to use a compressor. Using compression properly will help improve your mixes by keeping dynamics controlled. My Basics of Compression course will teach you everything you need to know to get started with compressors. Attack, release, threshold, ratio, I explain them all. I also will go over advanced controls such as the mix knob, knee, and side chain that you might see on some compressors. I also answer some frequently asked questioned about compression.

So if your just getting into engineering and you are struggling to understand compression this course is for you. My teaching method and analogies should give you confidence you need to use compressors.

For more on compression including compressor types, kinds, examples, uses, using classic compressors, and more please subscribe to my audio engineering: All About Compression course (Coming Soon!). By sharing some of my knowledge of 15 plus years in audio this course will teach you the following:

  • what is a compressor
  • how is compression used
  • controls on a compressor
  • how use the controls on a comrpessor
  • the difference between compressors and limiters
  • analogy for understanding compression
  • examples of how compression controls work

The perfect course for those that would like to learn the art of DJing.

Created by Costas Papa - Ableton Certified Trainer

Students: 179, Price: $109.99

Students: 179, Price:  Paid

The content is specifically prepared and structured to give you the fundamentals beyond the knowledge, experience, confidence, understanding, and the ability to DJ.

This is a traditional hardware course, where attendees will develop, hone, and master their skills on the industry-standard Pioneer CDJ setup. We got the latest installation from our education partners at Pioneer 2 X CDJ2000NXS2 and a 1 X DJM900NS2.

These sessions are highly practical and are heavily focused on the hardware, and developing the skill-set required to qualify as a DJ.

By the end of these sessions, you will be able to gain a better understanding of the art itself. Be comfortable using an industry-standard hardware DJ setup. Ideally, all attendees will be able to mix songs of their choice and develop their musical repertoire.

In the first session, we dissect and deconstruct the music composition “formula”, how songs are structured and where are the best key areas of mixing in and out, and developing a playlist of tracks that cohesively tell a story. We review the looper / cutter functions and discover all available options and modes. Using Vinyl mode as an alternative play mode and use as a creative tool. We intentionally depend less on the technology and focus on training our ear-brain-hand coordination. We also enter part 1 of the effect suite on the mixer. We further explore Rekordbox features to enable us to make the best out of our music library.

In the 2nd session hot cue creative play and performance concepts are learned, also part 2 of effects is now completed and further ear-brain-hand coordination is enhanced though practical class exercises.

In the 3rd session, we prepare our Rekordbox installation to record and produce a DJ set and which avenues we can work with online to promote our skillset. In this session we delve deeper into the technical aspects of Rekordbox and the CDJs, we create tags, filters and searchable playlists; we also program and create a personal profile of the hardware setup based on our favorite preferences. We transfer the above functions into Rekordbox to create a seamless integration with our Pioneer hardware and controllers.

In this last session, we discover external connectivity options using the RMX1000 app and others for further performance enhancements. We finish off with a Q&A session and a review. Then you are to record a professional 45 minute DJ set.

Finding Film Scoring Jobs

The Film Composer’s Guide To Networking & Pitching

Created by Jonathan Armandary - Award-Winning Film Music Composer

Students: 145, Price: $99.99

Students: 145, Price:  Paid

--- “Where do I look to find a film scoring job? How do I get started?!” ---

There I was, an “aspiring film composer” faced with the daunting task of finding my first paid film scoring project.

“Where do I start?!”

“Where can I look?!”

“Am I even ready?!”

All these questions were running through my mind.

I was desperate to become a “legitimate” film composer. To get paid for the work I loved doing. To get the recognition I felt I deserved for my music.

But to do that, first I had to find an actual film scoring job to work on!

Maybe that sounds familiar?

Maybe you’re honing your skills day after day, knowing that you need to get out there and find real projects. To get paid for your craft.

You dream of hearing your music blaring out of the speakers in a movie theatre. Of winning the coveted “Best Soundtrack” award at a film festival.

But maybe you’re like I was, and you just don’t know where to start. And the thought of reaching out to ANYONE before you feel “ready” scares the life out of you…

You keep telling yourself:

“Once I can afford all the equipment, I can get started”

“There are too many other composers who are better than me”

“I just don’t have the right connections”

“Where do they even advertise film scoring jobs?”

“I’m an introvert. I’m not good at talking to people, or reaching out to people”

So you just keep composing for yourself. Dumping your music on YouTube, hoping that someday a miracle will happen, you’ll go viral, and your inbox will go wild with job offers.

But deep down you know that’s not how it works.

Trust me when I tell you: I know the feeling.

When I first started searching for film scoring jobs, it was like I was practising archery blindfolded - I couldn’t even see the target, never mind hit the bullseye.

So I took a step back.

I started to think, to strategise, and to study.

And when I started my search for the second time, I was prepared. I knew where to look, what my plan was. I just had to test it out.

Before long, I was talking to my first real-life “client” (although I prefer to call them “friends”).

And then my second… third…

…my fifteenth!

The projects and referrals kept rolling in. Before long, I had more projects than I could handle!

And so I could start choosing the ones I wanted to work on...

...that’s when the award nominations started. And the award wins!

All because I took that step back, and thought about the right approach. Not just doing the “same-old-thing” and hoping I’d be discovered.

The truth is that there’s a way to get started on this path today.

That’s what my course, “Finding Film Scoring Jobs”, is all about.

Since those first tentative steps into the film scoring world, I’ve spent my life dedicated to helping other composers. I realised people weren’t able to take the step back that I did.

They “couldn’t see the woods for the trees,” as the proverb goes.

And so I pivoted into teaching at University, and then I founded - to share what I’d learned, and to help aspiring composers take that all-important “step back.”

To help them see the bigger picture.

But what exactly do they need to take a step back from?

Well, five things are holding most composers back:

--- Number #1 : Never Feeling Ready ---

I’ll let you in on a secret:

No one ever feels ready.

I’ve interviewed dozens of professional composers, and almost every single one of them says how unprepared they feel for each and every project they take on.

It’s called “imposter syndrome” - and it’s holding you back.

Take comfort in the fact that even the people you admire and aspire to be like still don’t feel ready for their next projects.

You are ready. As ready as you’ll ever be.

--- Number #2 : Not Having The Gear ---

What equipment do you need to score a movie?

Here’s the entire list:

  • something to record with

  • something to edit that recording with

That’s all.

Having the latest and greatest sample libraries and the most powerful computer might help with your workflow, but it definitely won’t help you find film scoring jobs.

I don’t know a single composer who ever landed a project based on their equipment.

But I do know composers that have scored films with next to no equipment whatsoever.

Even famous composers.

You already have all the equipment you need. You just have to use it.

--- Number #3 : Not Enough Time ---

If your water heater broke down tomorrow, how much time do you think you’d need to arrange a plumber, to deal with the logistics of letting them in/out, researching and purchasing any parts you might need, clearing space for them to work, etc.?

According to a study by Laura Vanderkam, one woman spent seven hours dealing with that exact problem.

You probably don’t think you have seven hours spare each week, but if you had to make something a priority, I’m sure you’d find that time.

Finding projects is one of the most time-consuming but also the most important parts of film scoring. Without projects, you aren’t a film composer.

So you can make time. You just have to prioritise.

--- Number #4 : Not Having The Right Connections ---

Connections are made, not given.

So you might not have the right connections…

But you can, and you will.

Very few composers are born with connections. They all develop connections over time.

Start building those connections today.

--- Number #5 : Going Alone ---

Most composers are afraid to ask for help. Afraid that if anyone does give them advice, it won’t be real advice (after all, why would anyone reveal their “secrets” to the competition?)

But the fact is that figuring this stuff out on your own is hard.

  • You have to figure out where to find people and projects.

  • You have to figure out what to say when you reach out.

  • You have to guess your way through pitches until you finally (hopefully) figure out what works.

All of that is time wasted.

Time that could be spent composing - because your outreach is targeted and efficient.

No time lost.

“Everything Jonny has done (over the years that I’ve known him), has truly been for the betterment of the film scoring community as a whole. I think he’s covered the straightest forward method to success in this industry in today’s environment. The path he lays out is clear and Jonny ensures that it’s all very straightforward.” - Sean Staples (Composer)

“I sent my first outreach email following your structure from the course and already I have got a hopeful result!” - R. Noble

“[The course] provided me with the necessary kick up the a** to tidy up my web presence. Having reached out to [a filmmaker] community, I’m now in receipt of a stack of video footage for a more unique video showreel. In turn, this has provided me with some industry contacts I wouldn’t have had before the course.” - R. Hicks

Students: 144, Price:  Paid

Having worked in the music industry for over 15 years, I am well aware of the challenges and obstacles that many artists face during the early stages of their careers.

Given that the music industry is continuously evolving and becoming increasingly competitive, it can often be difficult for aspiring singer-songwriters to develop a solid workable strategy for pursuing careers as professional music artists.

They often find it difficult to devise a workable strategy that suits their particular needs and objectives due to the fact that the Internet is congested with information that is too general and vague to offer any real insight.

This is compounded further by the fact that many modern-day educational programs contain excessive amounts of theory. The curriculum contained in these programs is usually created by tutors and teachers who work in the educational sector as opposed to people who have first hand experience of working in the music industry.

And that is precisely the difficulty that this course aims to address. It’s designed to help aspiring music artists to develop a solid workable strategy for progressing and succeeding in the modern day music industry

The lectures cover a wide range of topics that encompass music business, artist development, marketing, branding, web technology, copyright and contractual agreements. The main focus of the course is Strategy development – knowing what to do and how to do it

So if you’re intent on pursuing a career as a professional music artist and are looking to increase your chances of securing a record deal then this is definitely the ideal course is for you.

What They Don’t Tell You About Your Music Career

The most critical aspects of building a music career that most music business courses are missing.

Created by Draven Grey - Music Career Coach, Vocal Trainer, and Professional Musician

Students: 140, Price: $89.99

Students: 140, Price:  Paid

We want to welcome you and thank you from the bottom of our hearts for taking a minute to check out our course.

There are many "music business courses" out there, some from qualified people. However, when Draven and I investigated what was out there for people like you, we were disappointed. Sure, there may be some decent, slightly vague tactical information ("set up a Facebook fan page!" or "make YouTube videos!" or "create a buzz!"), but we soon realized that many if not all of them were missing some of the most important components: the mental game and the relationship building methodology that can mean the difference between real success or a lack of response in your music career.

Our goal for this course is to help you hear what your fans are saying, and how to speak so they will listen. We show you how to discover what your fans need and how meeting those needs can impact their lives in powerful ways. We show the ropes and take you through the step-by-step process of planning out your musical act's strategy. We go beyond the theoretical and have you workshop actual plans to get you from where you are to where you want to be.

We begin by showing you how to stand out in a crowded marketplace. Then, we show you how to attract fans, execute unforgettable live shows and provide just what your fans are asking for. When it's all said and done, you'll have a system that you can plug into time and time again to take your career to the next level and ensure you will always be able to support yourself with your music.

We live in a time where it's possible for anyone who is willing to do the work to have a meaningful and fulfilling music career on their terms. Your success is based on your knowledge, your determination, your grit, and above all, your passion for your music and your fans. This course intends to give you a road map for making your dreams a reality.

We want to thank you deeply for taking the time to investigate this course. Your time is an invaluable resource, and we believe that investing in this course will be well worth every minute of it.

We have spent years developing the knowledge and lessons that appear in this course in the most honest way possible, with real world experience. Everything we talk about doing here, we have both done and currently do in our personal and professional musical lives.

We hope that you're excited, because we can't wait for you to join us!

Learn Semi Classical Dance For Beginners

Semi Classical Dance Steps for Students Curious to Learn and Perform on Stage or Home

Created by Ankita Raghav - Dance Choreographer

Students: 67, Price: $19.99

Students: 67, Price:  Paid

Hi everyone. In this course, I'll be teaching you semi classical dance choreography on some of the great Hindi songs of Bollywood. Semi-classical dance is an art form that features extensive movements of your body while maintaining grace along with expressions and speed. Interestingly, this dance form breaks what is called a stylized structure in the classical dance. The steps and moves of semi-classical dance are not as complex or intricate as pure classical forms. However, the authenticity of the Indian dance form is preserved and students are able to grasp these lighter semi-classical dances easily.

The Semi-Classical course is grounded by:

  • Intricate choreography

  • Precision of movement (especially arm and head placements)

  • Ability to hold and play with rhythms

  • Building confidence in expressing oneself through movement

This course is great for beginners and intermediate dancers too – previous classical Indian dance training is not essential. By the end of this course, you'll be able to perform semi classical dance very easily and comfortably.

About Me:

Ankita Raghav is a professional choreographer with an extensive knowledge and experience in various dance forms including Semi Classical, Classical, Aerobics, Haryanvi, Rajasthani & Zumba etc. She is well experienced in a field of dance with extensive attitude in the use of appropriate movements, gestures & body language to portray a character, theme and dance.
