IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • If you are interested in taking most or all of my courses, I have a recommended order in which to watch them (although it's certainly not required).  I would start with "How to Design a Room in 10 Easy Steps" because most of my other courses are in-depth classes of the concepts touched on in this 10 step class.  Following the 10 Step Course, I suggest moving on to "How to Use Color Like a Pro", followed by "How to Work with Interior Design Styles Like a Pro", then "How to Use Lighting Design to Transform your Home", and finally "Design is in the Details".  My other courses, "How to Use Minimalist Interior Design to Live your Best Life", "Use Eco-friendly, Sustainable Design to Improve Your Life", and "How to Design Your Dream Kitchen" are all stand alone classes on specialty topics within interior design, and therefore, can be taken in any order.

  • Please be aware that this course, or any of my courses, is not intended to provide all of the knowledge needed to become a professional interior designer.  As with any professional field, there is a significant amount of education and/or experience that is needed to achieve competency in this field.  My intention with these courses is to provide some solid foundational knowledge to assist either those individuals interested in "DIY" interior design to work on their own projects more effectively, or to provide supplemental education to both interior design students and professionals.

Introduction

This course will focus on the hard-surface modeling workflow in Blender. This is a very important and fundamental tool that every artist should add to their 3D skill set. If you struggle with 3D modeling, the boolean workflow, or just don't know where to start, hard-surface modeling is a perfect topic to focus on for all skill levels.

What will the course cover?

You will learn proper modeling techniques and master 3D modeling and hard surface workflow in this comprehensive and fun course. As a general topic, the course will cover hard-surface modeling with a fun and practical focus on SciFi design. You'll also learn about the non-destructive workflow, another big strategy in 3D modeling. Here's a brief list capturing the main elements of the course:

  • Hard Surface Modeling

  • Practical 3D modeling techniques and workflows

  • Non-Destructive Modeling

  • Realistic and natural lighting

  • Correct and appealing composition

  • Rendering

  • Materials

  • Cycles Rendering Engine

  • SciFi design

Overview

We'll start by blocking out the basic shape in Blender, discussing some of Blender's fundamental modeling tools and hotkeys. You'll understand all aspects of 3D modeling and the hard surface workflow, and will be able to work confidently with booleans, bevels, and fix common modeling issues that most people encounter.

Next, we'll start learning how to use cutters, booleans, and modifiers to start making the model come to life. After getting most of the model created, we'll bring in the bevels to achieve accurate lighting on the corners and learn how to fix common issues such as artifacts, vertex overshooting, and modifier issues.

Perhaps the best part of this course is understanding how to fix mesh issues that most people encounter, but don't know how to properly fix. Bevel modifiers can cause all sorts of issues, such as artifacting and shading issues. It's actually super easy to fix, but most don't know how or don't care enough to do so. This course will not skip out on these problems, and you'll come out of it a better and more confident 3D artist.

At the end of the course, you'll learn proper lighting and composition, and will achieve a beautiful final render to share with your friends and art portfolio.

You'll also be protected by Udemy's 30-day money-back guarantee, so there's no risk in enrolling.

-

How is this course Different?

Undoubtedly, you've been working on a model and ran into one of these issues: shading, artifacts, broken bevels, crazy mesh distortions, lag, and things like that. At least one of these problems will be encountered during this course, and you'll also learn the correct way to fix these issues so that if you ever encounter them again, you'll know exactly what to do.

Also, hard surface modeling is a very powerful subject in Blender and 3D in general. There are so many different elements, destructive workflows, non-destructive workflows, and probably crazy terminology you've never heard of to begin with. After this course, everything will be crystal clear and your understanding of 3D modeling in general will be revolutionized.

So in addition to learning proper modeling techniques and fixes, you'll also learn how to create a beautiful SciFi crate design in the process. You'll learn various tricks to achieve that hard surface SciFi look, as well as how to get a perfect lighting setup and render.

Most outlets don't cover these subjects all-in-one, so having a comprehensive list of videos and a fun learning environment is what makes this course awesome.

-

Conclusion

Whether you're a seasoned Blender user or 3D artist, or a beginner trying to get the hang of things within Blender, this course is focused on you. I believe courses that are geared too much towards one skill level tend to not reach their goals as easily. Instead, making it readily accessible to all skill levels, whether by teaching a beginner the fundamentals of modeling or showing more in-depth tricks for the experienced user, is super important. The course will make you a more confident 3D artist and you'll probably never be bored of 3D after it.

Students: 1182, Price: $19.99

Introduction

This course will cover a fun and creative way to learn hard surface modeling in Blender by creating a beautiful SciFi weapon from scratch. You will learn how to block out the model, detail it, use hard-surface techniques for clean composition, and apply materials to give it a beautiful final render, all done completely within Blender.

Who is it for?

Quick answer: Everyone

This course is ideally for those who at least know the basic tool set within Blender (scaling, extruding, moving, menus, etc). Master or advanced knowledge of Blender is absolutely not required. However, if you are a complete beginner or are brand new to hard surface with no prior experience, I would suggest enrolling in our SciFi Crate Design in Blender course first (which can be found on our Udemy page here as well).

What will the course cover?

  • Hard Surface Modeling

  • Boolean and Bevel techniques

  • How to clean up shading errors

  • How to fix artifacts and mesh distortions

  • Vanilla (no addons) Blender workflow

  • Boolean cleanup

  • Topology Fixes

  • Subdivision Surface workflow with booleans

  • Materials

  • Lighting

  • Composition

  • Rendering

Amongst other topics, these are the primary points of focus. Specifically, you will learn not only how to model, but also how to clean up common issues involving bad shading and mesh artifacts. The ability to model and then clean up these errors is essential, and this course will cover everything you need to know for hard surface modeling.

Overview

We'll start by setting up the correct proportions using a reference photo. Although this is a SciFi model, it still needs to make sense, so we're going to make sure we get the trigger, barrel, grip, and things like that in the correct locations. After that, it will all be smooth sailing into making our own unique design.

Next, we will discuss how to properly use booleans and modifiers to create our own visual aesthetic without the need for a lot of geometry. Along the way, we will encounter common modeling problems and shading errors, which we will fix on the spot. We will also move our focus onto how to practically use bevels in our workflow, to avoid shading errors and artifacts in the first place.

Lots of people are also intimidated by subdivision surface modifiers with booleans. Don't be. The concept it actually quite easy once you wrap your head around the concept. We'll have several examples of combinations of subsurf, booleans, and bevels all in one object, with absolutely flawless shading.

Our personal favorite part of this course is working with materials and rendering the model after it's complete. Composition is something that needs to be considered, as it can be the difference between your model looking out of this world and beautiful or cheaply made. The course will cover how to use proper material settings, HDRI lighting, reflectors, and camera angles to achieve an aesthetically pleasing render. Best of all, no more waiting hours for your render! We'll show you some tricks that we both use personally to render our images in mere minutes.

We will also have an EXTRA section covering additional compositing in Photoshop. It is not required but will help your render 'pop' a bit more for your portfolio.

You'll also be protected by Udemy's 30-day money back guarantee for a stress-free purchase, so if this course isn't for you, you do not have to worry.

Conclusion

Whether you're a seasoned hard-surface modeler, or a beginner in Blender or modeling in general, this course will present a series of important and practical modeling techniques to get you up to speed in 3D modeling quicker than most YouTube tutorials may be able to do. We believe that courses geared too much towards one skill level results in a disconnect of information and learning, so we've made this easy enough to understand for beginners, but technical enough for advanced users to pick up on. This course will make you confident in 3D modeling and hard surface and you'll leave feeling ready to tackle your own modeling projects.

Remastered Content

As part of the SciFi Weapon Design in Blender - REMASTERED content, we have added two additional environment modeling tutorials for both weapons.

The first gun tutorial utilizes the Hard Ops and Boxcutter addons, Decal Machine for detailing, and the Definitely Eevee Materials System for rendering.

The second gun tutorial uses the vanilla workflow, with the exception of the Definitely Eevee Materials System for texturing.

We also use the Kit Ops 2, which can be downloaded for free.

Q&A

Q: Does the course use any paid addons?

A: No. This course uses the pure vanilla Blender toolset. We will, however, be using some free addons to help expedite our workflow. These addons will be covered at the beginning of the course and are not complicated at all.

*Update: The remastered content utilizes some paid addons, referenced above.

Q: How many weapons will be created in this course?

A: There will be 2 weapons created in total, one by Josh Gambrell and one by Ponte Ryuurui.

Q: I'm a complete beginner at Blender with no prior experience. Is this course for me?

A: We would suggest enrolling in our SciFi Crate Design course instead. The price is the same and is also on our Udemy page and is geared more towards absolute beginners with no prior experience.

Light is a powerful thing. Lighting affects everything it falls upon.

It creates atmosphere, drama and evokes different emotions as it changes.

In a famous quote Glenn Cunningham described effective lighting design like a beautiful painting. It is your medium to bring someone to an emotional state with your art.

Lighting design is indeed both a science and a art.

Light is the first element of design, without it there is no color form or texture.

Perhaps when it comes to interior design, lighting design is the one of its most important elements.

Without proper lighting design the home decor and architectural beauty cannot be experienced to its fullest capacity.

A well lit room assures a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home.

The right lighting design can make you feel more relaxed and productive.

It enhances every single corner in a room from the furniture to the fittings and textures.

Utilizing the right type of lighting and ensuring the correct light placement is the most crucial task in lighting design.

And modern day Lighting designers achieve this task, through tools like lighting design and simulation softwares.

A range of lighting design softwares are available in the market,

but the most popular Lighting design software is Dialux.

And in this course we are going to learn to use this software for our Indoor lighting design.

In this course, you will learn how to use Photoshop software to enhance your lighting design presentation or to create a lighting design concept in a fast and effective way.

Most clients prefer to see amazing images to convey the lighting design concept, especially in the facade and landscape lighting design applications. Therefore, Photoshop is the only software that can comply with these requirements.

Facade and landscape lighting design sometimes don't need to run the lighting calculation, it is more of a visual effect rather than lux level value. It only needs to show how it looks rather than getting the overall uniformity. Therefore, Photoshop is the only software that can do it.

Enrol in this course to learn the tips and tricks on how to use Photoshop in your lighting design.

This is a basic Photoshop course, therefore you should not be afraid that you never try using this software. This is for beginners who have zero knowledge of Photoshop software.

I will guide you step by step from the very basic to the medium complexity of the commands.

There will be sample materials for you, to practice your skills based on what you learned.
