What is Geetham ?

A Geethaṃ is a simple devotional melody song with same tempo throughout the song. There is no "anga" change, repetition and saṃgati in Geethaṃ. Geethaṃ usually have 10/12 avarthanams.

Though Geethaṃs have no absolutely defined divisions of pallavi, anupallavi or charanas, they may be observed in some cases. Some Geethaṃs contain sections rather than the defined divisions (pallavi etc.). They often have no sangatis or variations, with each swara taking one syllable of the sahitya. The Geethaṃ is sung without repetition from the beginning to end. However most Geethaṃs are concluded by repeating a portion of the opening part. Geethaṃs are set in medium tempo and contain no sangatis or variations and the flow of the music is natural. The theme of the sāhityaṃ (lyrics) is to praise God. Students learn these Geethaṃs after attaining a course in the preliminary saraḷī svarās to alankārās.

Who Am I ?

I am a professional classical musician. I have learnt Carnatic Vocal and Carnatic Flute-Instrumental from late. Manda Balarama Sharma garu and Sri.V.Nagaraju garu. I hold a Diploma in Carnatic Classical Music in both vocal and instrumental.

I have been performing since 1994 as an accompanist and in solo for numerous music and dance festivals, lecture demonstrations, cultural organizations and special occasions like Brahmothsavams in temples within the country.

I gave solo concerts in Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams., Tirupati, Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy temple, Yadagirigutta, Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy temple, Srisailam., etc., during the brahmothsavams.

Since 2001, I have been teaching numerous students through my own music and dance academy "Swara Vaahini" which is registered by the Govt. of Telangana.

I have been encouraging and developing my students to participate in various programs and television music shows like "Paadutha Theeyaga", Sa Ri Ga Ma Pa Little Champs, etc.

I have been taking online classes through Skype / Google hangouts / Whatsapp for the NRI students from U.S.A., Australia, Denmark, New zealand, Germany, Dubai, Kuwait, Malaysia and Singapore. Most of them are performing in Indian festival occasions regularly.

I would like to impart my musical knowledge to more and more people who are interested to learn and perform from the different parts of the world as MUSIC is the only way to reach god

Carnatic Flute Basics | Swarajathis & Swarapallavis

What is a Swarajati ?

Swarajati is a form in Carnatic music, which is helpful before learning a varnam. It has pallavi, sometimes an anupallavi, and at least one charanam. The themes of swarajathis are usually either bhakthi, love or courage. It is a composition which usually has a pleasing melody and are suitable for singing in early lessons, musical concerts and dance concerts. The most popular and the oldest known Swarajathi is in Huseni raga, hau re raa bhagaya in Telugu by Melattur Veerabhadrayya. Swarajatis have been composed in numerous raagas - Bilahari, Hamsadhvani, Kalyani, Janjuti, Khamas, etc.

What is a Swarapallavi ?

A Swara Pallavi (also known as Jathi Swaram) is a kind of composition which has only the Dhatu part(swara) with no sahitya

They are learnt after learning geethas and before varnams.

These are scholarly compositions and their Dhatu has the Raga bhavam.

- Usually Swara Pallavis are set to Madyama kalam (medium tempo) and set to

Adi and Chapu talas.

• Swara Pallavis can have 2 or 3 parts in the following manner;

1. Pallavi - Anupallavi-Charanams

2. Pallavi -Charanams

• In some charanams, mrudanga Jathis can be heard, hence the name Jathi

swarams,

- Swara Pallavis usually have 4 to 8 charanams.

- Compositional structure of a Swara Pallavi is same as that of a Swara Jathi,

The only difference is Swara Jathihas the Mathu (sahityam) part too, whereas

Swara Pallavi lacks the sahitya part.

- The piece in Hilahari raga SIGPDSND is a splendid example of this type of

composition.

- The sahitya 'Rara Venu gopabala' is a sahitya tacked later on to the piece.

• Swarajatis and ſatiswaras may be composed in Chauka kala (slow tempo) or in

Madhyama kala (medium tempo).

- Jati swara compositions are moulded on the patterns of jati passages/

pattems.

In some Jati swaras, the mukthayi swaras consist of half-avarta jatis.

Ragamalika jatiswaras also exist.

- Jatiswaram is a derivative name since phrases of jatis are strung into musical

sequence.

. The jati swaram is of interest from the rhythmical point of view.

• Prominent composers of Jati swarams are:

1. Swati Tirunal,

2. Ponnayya,

3. Sivanandam,

4. Vadivelu and

5. Veena Krishnamachari

• Ganakrama (Order of Singing):

• First, the Pallavi is sung, then the Charanams are sung and at the end of each

Charanam, the Pallavi is sung. They are sung thus:

• Pallavi

• Charanam 1-Pallavi

• Charanam 2-Pallavi etc.

|| A SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT TRADITIONAL WOODEN FLUTES ||

If you are looking for instruction on how to play traditional wooden flutes, please know that our course is intended solely for classical Western type flutes. Wooden flutes can vary greatly in tuning and fingering which means it's likely that all of our content will sound totally different than what you're producing on a wooden flute. However, you can also learn a ton of important foundational flute elements from our Beginning Flute course. With that in mind, please proceed with caution.

“The intermediate course is really effective, and covers the essentials. The instructor does an exemplary job in presenting the materials, and she is very pleasant and personable. I worked hard, so my results might not represent the norm, but I feel that I am at a lower intermediate level, perhaps ready for the advanced course. Both the beginning and intermediate courses were essentials for me, as I had never held a flute, much less attempted to play one. “
