Equalization Deconstructed: Four Methods to Better Sound

Mix more effectively using parametric equalizers and high pass filters

I built this course for beginner and intermediate audio engineers looking to refine their approach to equalization in the tracking or mixing process. With so many options, we will narrow our focus to semi-parametric, parametric and hi pass filters. In the course, I discuss four different methods to approach sculpting a sound but these are not the only ways to approach using EQ.

An engineer can play the mix quite safe and make minute changes. Other times, to achieve the desired results require using every dB of a parameter. The methods discussed in this course can help create clarity in mixes, help the important sounds stand out and achieve an overall desirable tonal balance. Or they can be used to make the greatest noisiest wall of sound!

Ear Training – Develop Your Listening Skills on the Piano

Have you ever wondered how some people can listen to a song just once, and then just sit down at the piano and play it?

This is because they have a well developed musical ear, and can hear the notes played and figure them out on the piano/keyboard.

This course will help you to develop your musical ear, taking you from the earliest stages of Piano note recognition to being able to figure out basic Piano Chords without the use of any aids other than your own listening ability. These skills when developed properly, will open up a whole new world for you in the realm of music. You’ll no longer be restricted to the notes on a page, or have to search the internet for the chords to a song. But most importantly, you will improve as a musician.

The best musicians always have a well developed ear, because it gives them a connection between what is in their head and translating that through their instrument, rather than being restricted to sheet music. If you develop this skill properly, you'll be able to listen to songs and understand what is happening, and figure them out and play them on the piano all by yourself.

You may also find that having a highly trained ear will help you in other scenario’s whether its playing piano with a band, improvising on the piano, music listening exams or writing songs. For example, let’s just say that you are trying to write a song, and have a melody in your head, you need to be able to play that on the piano, or figure out the chord that will accompany it. This course develops the skills needed to be able to do this using the piano.

So if you want to learn how to play by ear using the piano, take this step-by-step ear training course and have fun developing this essential skill.

This is a course that anyone wanting to learn to play music can enjoy, so why not enroll today.

Ear Training Bootcamp for Guitar Players

You’re a guitarist who relies on TAB, but wants to work out your favourite songs, riffs and solos by ear.

Imagine finally having the skills to focus in on and identify
elements in the music you love, so you can learn to play it more
accurately with more feel.

  • Immediately grab TAB instead of working out songs for yourself?
  • Don't know where to start with figuring out guitar solos?
  • Struggle to recognize the types of chords you hear?
  • Hear music in your head but are frustrated you can't translate it into playing it on your guitar?

Ear Training Bootcamp
gives you the techniques and exercises so you can begin to train your
ear to recognize notes, riffs, chords and melodies. Decipher songs and
solos by your favourite artists and start to unlock the songs and
musicality inside you.

Do you ask yourself: Why, after playing guitar for so long, can I not “hear and recreate”?

Because,
quite simply you've never practiced any techniques that focus on your
ears. Oh sure, you've practiced A TON OF STUFF for your fretting and
picking hands but nothing else, that's why you're struggling.

This course sets you on the path to finally harnessing the power
of your ears, fingers and brain and train them up so you can take it to
the next level as a better listener, and a better musician.

Imagine listening to a riff or melody and being able to put your hands on the fretboard exactly where those notes are

Ear Training Bootcamp
teaches the methods to do just that, saving you the time and the
frustration of aimlessly fumbling around on the fretboard blindly
hunting and guessing at what notes should be next.

From “total newb” to nailing songs on YouTube

Ok, I just made that up because it sounds good, but by practicing these Ear Training techniques you will:

  • Work out songs, riff and solos waaay quicker than you're doing right now
  • Be able to pull apart, analyze and understand what you hear to then know what to play
  • Be confident to learn a song without a dependency on TAB
  • Become closer to the music you love

Specifically for guitarists – no piano examples!

How many ear training videos or apps have you seen that use piano in the examples?

Too Many!

While the fundaments of Ear Training are common to all
instruments, if you want to learn to recognize and decipher guitar parts
(which you do). YOU HAVE TO LEARN TO LISTEN BY LISTENING TO GUITAR PARTS!

This course is full of both acoustic and electric guitar examples
with guitar tones from clean country to filthy metal distortion.
Because THAT’S what you need to develop and attune your ear to. Check
the Steinway Baby Grand at the door and let's get started.

Ear Training Bootcamp is a weekend course to help you begin to "hear and recreate" the songs you want to learn

Comments from Students

Goes from the Ground Up

“I like that it goes from the ground,
without taking any major leaps that might leave a gap in knowledge. I
also like that it provided a lot of resources to reinforce the knowledge
you're showing.”

Very Helpful

“The interval identification lessons were very helpful. Also loved the blues part and major and minor pentatonic.”

Small digestable chunks of good information

“I liked the way that the course was
presented. The logical flow of content was appropriate and I didn't feel
like anything needed to be rearranged. The length of the videos was
also really good. They were small, digestible chunks of good
information.”

What it's like to sit in with a guitar teacher in real life

“I like the the tone of the videos. It's
a good simulation of what it's like to sit in with a guitar teacher in
real life. The lessons are also quite similar to Leavitt's modern method
books but with a much more accessible presentation.”

No Jargon

“No jargon, good pacing, examples given, participation requested amongst peers, various teaching methods employed.”

He told me what to practice and it worked

“I can go through at my own pace. He told me what to practice and it worked!”

I liked the depth and pace

I
liked the depth and pace set by the course, it helps break down the
differences between major and minors, specifically the changes in the
notes.”

I've composed a series of pieces, one for each interval starting with a 2nd and going all the way to an octave, as well as some exercises and warmups to begin training your ear for harmony. Listen to the videos and try the exercises with me. Then practice with the backing tracks at your own pace. The more you sing and listen to these pieces, the quicker you will develop a memory for each interval. The idea is to sing some of the exercises for a few minutes everyday, and eventually you will begin to develop a memory for the sounds of the intervals (and the various rhythms). Training your ear doesn't happen over night, but with a little effort you will get better and better at hearing and reproducing the intervals. This will aid you in sight reading better, as well as figuring out the melodies you hear on the radio (and in your head as a songwriter). With a little practice and perseverance, you will soon be able to start identifying the intervals in those melodies, as well as the corresponding chords.

"Intervals" truly are the building blocks of melody and harmony, and once you can begin to understand their unique qualities and hear them internally, finding chords and harmonies will come more easily to you. This course is designed to get you seeing, hearing and singing intervals (the spaces between notes in the tunes we love) and then learn how they relate to chords and work together to create unforgettable songs and melodies.

Learn how the scale and intervals work in a step by step process designed to get you internalizing pitch and harmony even when you are not singing or playing! Learn what bass clef chords look and sound like on the piano as well, and if you have a keyboard, try to play along on some of the pieces!

Disclaimer: for those of you who may have studied solfege, I have taught both "movable" and "fixed" solfege for 20+ years, but I prefer to teach with movable solfege for this series as it helps to develop a memory for patterns in melody and harmony no matter the key if you know that song from The Sound Of Music, "Do a Deer", that's based on the "solfege" scale).

I've included pdfs of the sheet music which can be downloaded and printed out to further aid your note reading skills. There are also many backing tracks for independent practice. Let's start training your ear and developing your innate musical gifts! And as always, if you try the course and are confused in any way, please reach out to me with your questions and concerns.

Many times in music we say that “he has a good ear”, meaning that someone can listen to a melody or a song and find out the notes that he listens to.

How many times has happened to listen to a song and want to play it on your instrument?

And then start searching on the internet to find it? And many times this search may not have a good result…

For you that play music you say that someone has a good ear or another guy doesn’t.

This happens for all of our talents, one talent to be better than another. It can happen to someone to have a good ability to hear and find out what he hears.

We’ll give the tools to guide our ears to understand the context of what we hear.

Using our theory knowledge we can find ways to approach this.

We’ll pass through the 3 elements of music that we must learn to hear.

Rhythm, melody and harmony, and we’ll see step by step how we can decode them.

I always say to my students that knowledge is the most important tool to move on,

but practice will give strength to knowledge and will take us forward and improve us.

In this course, we are going to learn the absolute basics of ear-training, pitch recognition, as well as how to finds chords and melodies. We will be discussing how to recognize and name groups of notes on the piano by using "relative pitch" as well as the basic concepts behind harmony, tonality, and musical keys.

Each class will have the same format:

  • Introduce a new concept in ear training

  • Give examples/exercises of how to listen, understand and achieve this concept

  • Take a guided quiz based on what you have learned

What makes this class somewhat unique is that we will start at the absolute beginning, and once you understand the concepts of higher and lower sounds, we then explore very simple pitch recognition (note naming) quizzes and tutorials.

This is the perfect course for someone who want to learn how to play by ear, but feels overwhelmed by the fast pace of many "play music by ear" courses.

This way, you are actively involved in the learning process and learn more effectively and quickly.

Because you program your hearing for sound patterns and retrieve them by singing.

If you already play an instrument, you can start building your ear now!

Try this method, and you will notice how well your hearing develops.

You will perceive music with different "ears."

I will show you many graphics that will help your hearing.

In addition to ear training, you will also learn to understand the musical staff and read music from scratch.

For a better understanding at the end of each chapter, there is a notated melody, which you then sing.

This way, you can apply the knowledge you have learned right away!

This is a goal-oriented course that naturally builds your musical ear.

This is what you will learn:

So I have written three books on music theory based on his insights and my complementary ideas.

This enables me to pass on something essential about music to you here and now.
