Audio Equalization (EQ) Techniques and Tips

Learn how to EQ and use equalizers effectively. Understand the art of EQ and how to equalize musical instruments

Created by Marco Galvan - Avid, Steinberg Certified Audio Engineer, Instructor

Students: 1191, Price: $29.99

Students: 1191, Price:  Paid

Learn how to use an EQ properly! The equalizer is a very powerful tool when mixing audio, but if misused, it can make everything sound worse! With this course, you can learn how to use equalizers in the right way and improve the quality of your production. This course was created to start from scratch in the world of equalization. From the basics of sound and frequency to the types of EQ's and common applications.

Learn the most important concepts for a good equalization:

  • Types of equalizers, characteristics and applications.

  • Hertz, dB, frequency ranges.

  • Their typical controls and settings.

  • The use of filters: HPF, LPF, BPF, notch.

  • How the "magic frequencies" of different instruments work.

  • Common EQ techniques for vocals, guitars, drums, bass, etc.

  • The differences between graphic, parametric, shelving and Baxandall EQ's.

  • Serial and parallel equalization.

  • Procedures to equalize in a fast and effective way.

You can learn how to take the best out of an equalizer!

You will understand in a practical way how to use an equalizer and get better results in your mixes and music productions. The techniques shown in this course will work in the home or pro studio (with any DAW) and in live sound situations as well. Either with hardware or software EQ's, and when editing or mixing audio!

This course is a great option for DJ's, music producers, musicians, sound technicians, audio enthusiasts, etc.

  Course Overview

First, we will deal with the concept of frequency and how it is perceived. We will understand the frequency ranges and their importance in sound. This is crucial for proper equalization. You will never get a great sound unless you learn what to hear even before touching the EQ! This course is based on that principle.

Then we will tackle the application of audio filters to minimize unwanted frequencies or to create special effects.

After that we will work with equalizers, we will show the different kinds of EQ's and their applications. You'll see demonstrations of equalization procedures for different instruments, learning which frequencies cause the most common problems for different instruments and you'll be able to practice with the included material.

Finally, we'll talk about Audacity, the free audio editor, and how you can use it to equalize your material without buying any specialized software.

The course has been carefully designed to be a self-paced, step-by-step process right from the beginning, so you won't need any previous audio knowledge. You will learn in a fast and effective way. You can even study a pair of lessons in just 15 minutes a day!

You will be guided by a certified audio instructor (Avid, Yamaha, Steinberg), with more than 15 years of teaching experience at all levels, from professional seminars to college-level classes and a top instructor on Udemy, so academic quality is guaranteed.

Forget about incomplete tutorials on the web. In this course, you will find the most important information about equalization in an organized, concise and easy-to-follow way.

"Great class! helps me to understand with ease. Straight to the point, with great examples and explanations". David Virtue.

"I liked that he gave a keyword to help remember the different frequency ranges...". Debra Peterson.

Walking Bass – Quick Start Guide

Learn to improvise effective walking bass guitar lines on your own using a simple strategy.

Created by Bogdan Radovic - Bass instructor

Students: 638, Price: $49.99

Students: 638, Price:  Paid

Always wanted to learn how to play walking bass, but it was too difficult?

This course is my personal “instant walking bass” recipe. You’ll learn the basic concepts and strategies that will allow you to improvise simple walking bass lines in just a few weeks of practicing. Yes - you will be IMPROVISING on your OWN! Believe it or not. The strategies I’ll be sharing are not that difficult to master and I’m sure you’ll have that eureka moment when you figure them out - just like I had when I was starting.

Please watch the free preview videos to get a taste for what’s inside.

This course is shot in full HD video, with quality bass playing audio mixed with the backing tracks. The course is split into five chapters, each adding a new element to our “instant-walking-bass” strategy. This means that each chapter is really doable - you just need a bit of practice.

This course includes:

  • PDF, Guitar Pro 5 & Guitar Pro 6 tabs for each playing example
  • Interactive backing track videos for jamming and practice
  • Downloadable backing tracks in mp3 format
  • Text transcripts for each lesson
  • English subtitles
  • Unlimited forum help and instructor feedback

I want you to know that I would love if you would post your questions as you progress through the course. Please feel free to send me messages anytime, I’ll be checking them out and responding quickly. Also, I’d like to encourage you to record audio files or videos (you can post videos on Youtube and share the link) and send them to me for feedback.

I’m here to help YOU, so please don’t be shy :)

This course is meant as an introduction to walking bass. We won’t be going into any complicated theory and walking bass concepts. What you’ll gain are necessary foundations for expanding your knowledge and more importantly - means of cheating your way into walking bass territory. After all, not all of us end up being session musicians or super stars in certain genres. All musicians (even pros), often prefer to take the easy route and learn how to “fake” certain styles. This is what you’ll learn, you’ll learn how to “fake” walking bass type of lines until you are ready for more. I must say, that this can be a lot of fun and a lot of my friends (myself included), never actually feel the need later on to learn specific styles in more depth.

This course, does not rely on any music theory (at least complicated one). This is a problem of many other walking bass courses as those just dig too deep into music theory that it becomes boring. You’ll just need to have a very basic understanding of how to find certain notes on the fretboard (in basic, most often used positions on the neck). Since walking bass heavly relies on chords, you’ll need to have a basic understanding of chords and root notes, but we cover those topics within the course.

Please send me your feedback about the course. What did you like? What did you not like? How could I improve it? Your feedback means a lot to me and I need to in order to better shape the course content for YOU.

Please Enroll Today!

" Excellent Course

Was able to play in the church after a month :) "

Are you overwhelmed with over complicated music books? Frustrated with confusing advert ridden carrot on the stick how to play the bass guitar videos? Getting nowhere fast?

That was me too...

My story

"I struggled to get motivated and commit basic bass principles to memory. Unable to find a user friendly way to learn the bass I ended up putting it in the cupboard and not playing it for weeks at a time. It's all about the bass eh...

"When I first started playing with other musicians I didn't know where the notes were on the fret-board. I struggled to play anything and didn't feel confident enough. I'd feel embarrassed when I didn't know where an F# or the Bb was. The more I studied where the notes were on the bass fret-board, the easier I could interact with musicians and play music. When someone said lets play E, A & then Bb I'd know where the notes were on the fret-board, and what to do."

"It's important to say the notes out loud that you're playing so that they're committed to your memory."

"Don't worry it does eventually sink in so keep practicing the exercises and you'll get there."

"I found that learning the 12 bar blues pattern helped me to interact with other musicians, as there's a lot of songs out there that use that same pattern. Most rock and roll and blues songs use it so knowing it is a very useful tool to get you going and playing some cool stuff."

Beginner Bass Guitar Course – Slap Bass

Master the Fundamentals of Slap Bass Technique

Created by Umut Aksoy - Bass Player

Students: 455, Price: $59.99

Students: 455, Price:  Paid

If you are a beginner who is looking for a guide on playing slap bass, this is the course for you.

Slap bass is the technique we use for making our bass shine through the mix and maybe solo with a rhythmical sense. Larry Graham first invented the technique for mimicking the bass drum and the snare drum with slaps and pops. Over the years, bass pioneers like Stanley Clarke, Louis Johnson Marcus Miller, Victor Wooten pioneered the technique and it became a fundamental technique every bass player needs to master.

The course starts from the basics and teaches you fundamental techniques you need for playing slap bass. We start from the basic body posture, left and right hand techniques and start advancing to more challenging techniques.

Every subject is explained in detail with exercises and licks for you to practice. Licks also have backing tracks to accompany you, so you can use what you have learned in context. Those licks are related to what you will most likely encounter when you practice slap bass songs. They are just more concentrated versions of songs to practice a certain aspect of slap bass.

There are no major requirements to practice this course. But being able to play Fingerstyle Bass on a beginner level will definitely help you along the way. So if you are lack in that area, you can check out Beginner Bass Guitar Course - Fingerstyle Bass as well.

Happy Practicing!

Beginner Bass Guitar Course – Music Theory

Bass Player's Guide To Music Theory

Created by Umut Aksoy - Bass Player

Students: 358, Price: $24.99

Students: 358, Price:  Paid

This course is your introduction to music theory and their applications on bass. Every subject we are talking about in this course is what you will exactly encounter on either playing live or in recording environments. This course is written by a bass player, for bass players.

From my experience over the years with hundreds and private and online students, music theory in general are held responsible for every bump on the road musicians may encounter. If a musician feels inadequate for some topic, they usually blame their lack of knowledge in music theory. Or they believe music theory is so hard to learn and they think they will never get it. Reason and problem is, people studying music theory from resources written for general musicians and there are no applications or explanations for what each subject is used for their specific instrument. Even if the musician studies it, they will most likely not have a clue about what to do with that information.

This course is designed for showing bass players that should not be the case. This course simplifies music theory and teaches you the topics you absolutely need to know and nothing else. We must say that, it is now watered down or for dummies. You will learn the subject and apply it on your bass. There is no walking around hard work, you still need to put in the work, but you will not waste your time for something you will now apply or have any applications.

After studying this course, you will have a strong foundation and will be able to keep on learning about music theory. . Music theory and harmony are wide subjects and probably has no limits, but learning the fundamentals right will definitely help you on your journey.

Good Luck!

Bass Guitar Setup and Stringing: A Comprehensive Guide

The proper way to string, adjust, tune, and set up your bass. Improve the sound and playability of your bass and more!

Created by David Taub - Guitar and Bass Instructor

Students: 129, Price: $19.99

Students: 129, Price:  Paid

Would you like to immediately sound better on bass guitar and extend the life of your beloved instrument?

Then grab your bass and let us show you how to improve the sound and playability of your instrument almost instantly!

This course shows you everything you need to know to properly string your bass, as well as how to set it up perfectly and have it playing like an absolute dream.

No expensive or complicated tools needed either.  Just a few simple tools that you probably already have in your house.

Best of all, you'll save big money because it can cost upwards of $55 or more to have a professional do what you can easily do yourself with the simple, step-by-step instructions you'll see in this course.

Perhaps your bass does not play as well as it used to ... or maybe your bass just wont stay in tune as long as it once did ... or perhaps you hear that ugly buzzing sound on certain frets ... or maybe your action has slowly gotten higher and higher.

Well, these are all normal things that happen to a bass guitar over time. Your bass guitar, after all, has moving parts that need periodic adjustment and refinement to keep the instrument within specs and playing and sounding like you want.

But why not learn to perform these simple adjustments yourself?  You'll not only sound better immediately, but you'll now have the ability to fix any issues on the fly— and save a significant amount of money in the process.

We go over all the tools you need to complete a setup. And we keep it easy, just a few simple tools will get the job done. You will amaze yourself when you hear the difference that a few simple adjustments can make!

In this course you will learn:

-The proper way to string your bass and replace those old strings. When old strings don't hold their tune and take on that dreadful "dead" sound, they need to be replaced. Every bassist should know how to properly replace their own strings. This is something you will have to do quite often, so you will want to learn the proper procedure because improperly installed strings won't stay in tune and won't perform their best. You'll discover tips and tricks to make this process easy. We literally show you which string is which, how to cut the strings to the proper length, and how to properly wind the string to the peg. You will also learn what to do to new strings to help keep them in tune.  We leave no stone unturned and start from scratch so that no one gets left behind.

-All about truss rod adjustment.  You'll learn how to adjust the truss rod to perfectly set your bass guitar neck relief. We show you the proper way to perform this critical adjustment.

-How set your bass action. You'll learn how to adjust the string height to set your bass guitar's action to your exact preference. If you like your action low and fast, no problem, as we show you how. Or maybe you like your action a little higher, so that you have more room to work the notes — we'll show you that, too.

-How to set the intonation. You'll learn how to check and set your bass guitar's intonation so that your notes sound to pitch where they should.

-Learn three different methods to tune your bass. Why three?  Well, some people find one way easier than another way.  Knowing all three gives you the flexibility to work with your instrument in the way you prefer.

In our bonus tone lesson you will learn about all the factors that contribute to your overall tone. Learn about the volume and tone controls on your bass and how the affect tone. Learn how to get different tones from tonal adjustments. Learn about pickups and how active versus passive pickups affect tone. Go from bright and punchy to dark and muffled — whatever your preference.   You'll learn how to get various tones quickly and easily.

You will also see a fun bass tapping lesson to introduce you to fretboard tapping. Learn how to get some awesome, unique sounds from your bass. This is a technique that you can really run with and get creative.

Bottom line:  This is a comprehensive course that will give you and your bass a lifetime of playing pleasure.  You'll also gain a ton of confidence in being able to control your instrument better.  This will translate into advancing more quickly in your playing skill.

Feel free to email us any questions and we wish you the best in all your musical endeavors,

Did you ever hear anyone playing washboard?

It's a fantastic sound - and so easy to play.

My main instrument for playing and teaching is harmonica and I like to vary my act by swapping between the two.

How about playing washboard and harmonica at the same time? Yes it can be done. I end up playing both badly when I try that!

Whenever I get the washboard out you can see the audience staring at it and pointing before discussing with their friends. What are they saying I wonder? 'What in the world has he got there...?'

In this course I share my extensive experience and love of music to bring you the basics of washboard playing.

It's a little drum kit but it's portable, cool, easy to play and cheap to buy. This is a different type of percussion instruction but it does the same job.

If you have ever wanted to be involved in music but didn't get the right opportunities you just found one! With the skills you learn here you can immediately join in with another musician - from the front porch, to a bbq or join a session.

Washboards are commonly used in Country Music, Jug Bands, Bluegrass, Blues, Skiffle, Jazz, Folk, Old Timey, Americana and loads more.

I've played mine in Irish sessions many times and it works well there as well.

It's great in any acoustic music such as rock, reggae, ska, 'world', and more.

There is no instrument as versatile as the washboard - you can even use it for cleaning your clothes, which other instrument can do that?

Come on in, watch the first 10 minutes FREE and see what you think.
